Your home can quickly flood if your toilet overflows, your water heater leaks, or a pipe breaks. Since most people in the United States live in apartments or townhomes, a big water problem in your unit can also affect your neighbors.

When you least expect them, these things can happen. That’s why we’re available to our customers around the clock. At Regal Plumbers, our emergency plumbers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide quick solutions and service that will get your home back to normal and give you peace of mind again.

How to Handle a Plumbing Emergency

In an emergency, your home could flood and be damaged by water because of broken or frozen pipes, rusted water heater tanks, or clogged sewer lines that cause your toilet to overflow.

Step 1: Turn the water off at the valves.

This needs to be done right away to stop more water from getting into your home.

If your pipes have burst, find the main water shutoff valve and turn it clockwise to stop the water flow. Most of the time, this valve is in the basement or near the water meter. A reminder to people who live in apartments: if you turn off this valve, you could also cut off the water to your neighbors.

If your water heater is leaking, find the cold water valve near the top of the tank and turn it clockwise to turn it off. If there isn’t a valve in this area, you’ll need to shut off the main valve in your home. Once this is done, find your breaker box and turn off the power to your water heater. This lets the heating elements in the tank cool down and reduces the risk of a fire.

If your toilet is overflowing, find the valve near the bottom of the toilet and turn it off. If this doesn’t stop the water from overflowing, the problem is probably caused by a clogged drain or sewer line.

Step 2: Call your plumber right away.

Taylor Group wants to make sure that our neighbors are safe when they have plumbing emergencies. We’ll send a skilled plumber to your house with all the tools and equipment he or she needs to fix the problem.

Step 3: Stay safe until the plumber gets there.

Watch out for electrical devices or outlets that have been damaged by water. Try to clean up the area so that your plumber can get to the pipes or equipment faster and fix the problem.
